Sony, SEGA and Nintendo would all essentially be Microsoft's OEMs. Now imagine this on consoles where innovation would be rare because all consoles would be running a proprietary OS created by a single company. It is estimated that Microsoft's Windows monopoly has held the computer industry back twenty years. When they saw the success of gaming consoles, especially the PS1, they saw it as a threat to their Windows Monopoly so they wanted to get console manufacturers to all use Windows and their proprietary APIs so that they can continue to further destroy and stagnate the tech industry. Microsoft doesn't care less about consoles or gaming.
